Our bodies are composed of about 60% water, and even our bones contain a watery composition, at about 37%. We are born from a watery environment and our bodies are soothed and calmed when we enter water. So why doesn’t everyone sleep on a waterbed?
To many people who have slept on a water bed throughout their lives, sleeping on any other kind of mattress would be impossible, and would be considered unhealthy.
Lifelong water bed owners have seen water beds evolve from the original swishy, oceanic like sensation of the original waterbed, to the more sophisticated models found today, that offer “waveless’ and motion reducing technology, the benefits of additional comfort layers like memory foam and latex, and even heated water.
We all might remember the original water bed design, called a “hardside” water bed, which was a rectangular wooden enclosure with a heavy platform and bulky headboard, that may have included the ubiquitous mirror and old school light fixtures. In the 50 years since the original waterbed was invented by Charlie Hall, who wrote his graduate school thesis on the subject in San Francisco in 1969, waterbeds have evolved. A lot.
Sleeping On Water Offers A Natural, Levitating Sensation That Delivers Total Body Support, Removing Pressure Points And Contouring To Your Body.
Today, if you were to look at a typical water bed from the outside, you might never know that it was an advanced sleep surface designed to deliver flotation like sleep and a levitating sensation that eliminates pain and pressure.
And Americans are embracing, once again, the phenomenon of flotation sleep, which has undergone a complete makeover, technological improvements, and recognition by physicians and sleep experts as the best sleep surface you can provide for your body and your well being. But what is it about a waterbed that is poised to make it a sweeping cultural phenomenon- for the second time?
At Habitat Furnishings, we’ve been reinventing flotation sleep technology for 35 years. We’re reinventing waterbed technology every day to create the most comfortable, supportive, and pressure reducing sleep surface you will ever experience. All at a highly affordable price. The stigma of the waterbed being a bulbous bag of sloshing water is far from the reality of the watermattress of today.
We were borne from water, and our bodies crave the benefits that flotation sleep can offer. Foam and coil mattresses cannot truly relieve pressure like sleeping on water can. By pushing weight and pressure to the side, your body floats, almost levitating, on the most yielding and forgiving sleep surface you’ll ever experience.
People who have slept on water beds for decades already know this. Their bodies tell the tale of the therapeutic and healing qualities that the right mattress can bring to our lives. Our Mirage WaterMattress is designed to bring you into the fold of knowing. We invite you to learn more about our reinvention of what restorative, rejuvenating sleep really means.
Unlike conventional mattresses which create "pressure points" on areas of greatest weight concentration, a waterbed (watermattress) contours to the exact weight and shape of your body providing total, even support. Basically, you are floating on water, in exactly the same way you would be suspended buoyantly in the sea.
As a result you will experience improved blood circulation and rarely toss and turn, which can disrupt a good night's sleep. You will awaken feeling refreshed, well rested and energized.
Even foam and coil type mattresses that are supposed to deliver pressure relief and weight distribution fail when compare to the physics of a waterbed. Foam and coils may yield to pressure, but they are unable to push the load sideways, away from your body.
The result with a conventional mattress is always the same. Pressure goes down, and although certain kinds of memory foam and gel foam surfaces can disguise this effect, and if you lie still long enough, the pressure slowly pushes back against your body, causing endless tossing and turning.
Making A Roaring Comeback: Water Beds Deliver The Pressure Relief, Genuine Comfort, And Soothing Therapeutic Warmth Your Body Needs
A cold, unheated mattress of any kind will draw heat away from your body with a chilling effect. The latest gimmick with conventional mattresses is to try to convince you that all mattresses sleep hot, and that you need a state of the art high tech foam layer or special fabric on top of the bed to “air condition” your mattress, and “chill it down”.
Conventional mattresses, whether a foam “bed in a box” type unit or a hybrid coil and foam mattress, remove necessary warmth from our bodies at night, causing us to conserve warmth which disrupts sleep, consumes energy, and keeps us from getting the restorative rest and REM sleep we need.
A heated water bed provides an even and gentle warmth that penetrates and relaxes your muscles, allowing a more restful, therapeutic sleep. It’s soothing, calming, and therapeutic, providing endless benefits to our physiology that improves the quality of our lives.
A Water Bed Has Medical Benefits That Improve Your Wellbeing Unlike Any Conventional Mattress Option
According to the American Physical Therapy Association, about 60% of Americans suffer from lower back pain, and about 30% never report their conditions.
In many cases, back pain could be prevented by sleeping on a water mattress by simply allowing you to rest and to sleep in a more comfortable and beneficial position. With a water bed, water provides a unique distribution of support for the body so that your body weight is equally distributed.
A water bed removes pressure from the spine, allowing the spinal musculature to relax. It does this by pushing pressure away from the body, much as you would by spreading pizza dough sideways on a pan.
Flotation sleep on a water bed benefits many medical conditions and provides the most beneficial and therapeutic sleep surface available.
Premature infants and newborns are often placed on flotation bedding which contains water chambers, as it simulates the environment of the womb and promotes healing.
Waterbeds are an essential therapeutic fixture for conditions such as multiple sclerosis, arthritis, lower back pain, paralysis, training recovery needed by performance athletes, cardiac rehabilitation, and more.
The core benefits of a waterbed are its ability to eliminate pressure, equally distribute body weight which allows for ease of movement while sleeping.
Because today’s waterbeds are gently heated, the healing benefits of gentle warming reduces inflammation in joints, promotes better vascular circulation, helping to reduce pain from arthritis, neck and back pain, and even hand and foot stiffness
Water beds are proven to help with insomnia as well. Sleep experts estimate 30% of Americans experience some form of sleep disturbances, trouble falling asleep or waking up during the night unable to fall back asleep. With pressure removed from the spine and joints, you’re able to fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep, increasing the total sleep time and reducing the number of times you wake up in the middle of the night.
Finally, for the millions of Americans suffering from allergies, there’s hope. A vinyl water chamber, designed to provide virtually waveless waterborne sleep, is the key component of a water mattress and provides a non-porous sanitary sleeping surface that greatly reduces the population of dust mites and dead skin cells found on regular mattresses.
The Mirage® WaterMattress: Designed To Heal Your Body And Provide You With The Deep, Restorative Sleep You Deserve.
The Mirage® WaterMattress, made by Habitat Furnishings, is the most advanced flotation system of its kind available today. Made entirely in the USA in our own factory in Baltimore, MD, it is a “softside” water mattress, meaning it is a complete mattress that requires no exterior wood frame or rails. Our system is designed to sit directly on top of an existing solid top platform or foundation, and can be purchased as a mattress only unit, or with our own handcrafted solid top and upholstered foundations and metal frame.
The Mirage® WaterMattress features waveless water chamber technology, so you receive the buoyant and pressure relieving benefits of flotation sleep with minimal motion transfer and zero wave action. We intentionally incorporate a very small amount of “wave sensation”, about 10%, to allow for the calming and soothing element of a waterborne sleep surface.
Underneath the bamboo quilted top, to provide even more weight distributing and pressure relieving quality to the mattress, we include a 2” layer of natural Talalay latex. Latex has been proven to attenuate and relieve pinpoint pressure by distributing weight horizontally, creating a levitating like sensation. Combining natural latex and water in the same sleep surface offers a buoyant, naturally supportive, and truly floating experience. And, every morning, your body will thank you for it.
Beneath the latex layer you’ll find our proprietary and hand crafted vinyl water chambers made using 30mm material to resist punctures and provide a lifetime of service. We use our own radio frequency welding systems to build our own water chambers, bench built in our own factory.
The water chamber is surrounded by a perimeter foam rail system which is wedged to allow for more fluid motion at the top of the mattress, and to provide minimal motion transfer at the bottom.
The perimeter foam rail system is placed inside the outer encasement fabric (as shown in the assembly video) and provides the exoskeleton of the Mirage®, and keeps the water chamber neatly confined to the mattress area.
Before installing the water chamber inside the rail perimeter, you will install our vinyl liner, which serves as a barrier to protect any unlikely leaks from the water chamber itself. The Mirage® system is shipped out RTA (ready to assemble) and takes about 45 minutes to setup. Our setup assembly video and included instructions guide you from opening the box to filling the water chambers, and zipping the system up just in time for bed!
Our proprietary digital water heater pad (included) is designed to be placed directly on top of the foundation piece or solid platform upon which the mattress is placed, plugs in to any nearby wall outlet, and allows you to maintain your desired level of warmth.
Included with your Mirage® system is our fill kit adapter which allows you to connect a garden hose to your bathroom sink for easy filling. At the mattress end, another adapter allows you to connect the hose to the fill opening on the water chamber itself.
Should you ever have to empty the chamber, you can easily reattach the fill kit connectors and drain the chambers into bathtub or floor level drain.
We also provide a water conditioner that you can add to the fill valve once you begin to add water using a garden hose or other hose device if you wish to fill from inside your home. The conditioner prevents algae or other material from accumulating inside the water chamber and keeps it in pristine condition.
You can purchase our recommended foundations, which are hand crafted and upholstered in our facility, designed to accommodate the weight of a filled water chamber along with the weight of its users. the foundations are a solid type unit, made using natural and solid wood materials. The foundations are designed to be place on any metal or wooden bed frame.
You do not need to purchase the foundations if you are installing your Mirage® on a solid top platform bed or other foundation. You’ll need a surface that can accommodate up to 800 lbs. without settling or bending. Should you want to start with all new bedding, or if you do not have a platform base, our handcrafted foundations are designed to support the weight of both the air chambers and sleepers with ease, and are shipped pre-assembled.
The foundations are split pieces and can be placed side by side on metal or wood frame, and the Mirage® system can be placed directly on top of the split foundation set. Because they are shipped as split units, they are easier to handle, can be brought up a typical flight of stairs without issues, and simply sit side by side.
What Owners Say About Their Mirage WaterMattress…
T. Paul, North Carolina: “I will never own another mattress..no motion transfer, supports my weight perfectly”. Mr. Paul previously owned a pillow top mattress but had problems with back support and pain. He also described his Mirage as having a “fluid feel” without any concern about wave action. “Zero pressure points”, and described the layer of latex as “tying everything together” and enhancing the levitating feel of the bed.
Beth K. Orem, Utah: “Looks like a traditional mattress, very easy setup and I LOVE the latex foam layer on top. Sheets, mattress pad and comforter fits perfectly. Soft and comfortable, moves slightly with me, just the right amount...for sure, this is the bed for me, and I cannot see how anyone would be disappointed with it. Highly recommended...and thank you for your customer service!”
